Human sexuality has got few issues of concern in the society. Arguments over the homosexuality, its causes and the ways of managing it continue over media and to date are still issues of concern. Access to pornographic materials by all age groups including children particularly through the internet has been the primary cause of both their easy reach and impacts they have towards the current generation sexual behaviors. According to the reports, three out of four mature adults, are believed to have sex before they marry with a 25% and 15% in males and females respectively (Balswick & Balswick, 2008). Non-consensual and uninvited sex is also high mostly in women resulting from rape and other sexual harassments.
Sexuality has got a great challenge towards an individuals morality and Christianity has little control over it as it becomes difficult for one to be consistent in their follow up. Human beings have been viewed as a fallen creature in terms of sexual conducts according to Gods expectations. Biblical foundations, principals, and guidelines should be our base of morality to enable us to balance between mercy and truth. Authentic sexuality has been defined as genuine, real, trustworthy and believable sex (Balswick & Balswick, 2008). It was Gods intention that sex becomes like that. However, human sins have brought distortion in sexuality.
Sexuality and gender are closely related concepts. Gender refers to one's role as defined by their sex in the particular social culture whereas, on the other hand, sex means the biological body differences between males and females. Sexual revolution began then followed by gender development. Gender roles and expectations from both sexes differ from the traditional perspective and the perspective is believed to have changed in the modern society (Balswick & Balswick, 2008). Sexuality is learned just like other behaviors in the society by both sexes. Sexuality tends to differ depending on an individuals background, family, sex, friends education, and motives. Change in morals over time, religion, contemporary issues emerging in the society and technology change are some of the factors over which sexuality is changing.
Human sexuality can be defined as an interactive process between biological, theological and sociological factors that has an impact in ones life. Social, theistic and biological determinations as well as and social cultural factors like culture, society, and family together connects humans to nature and God giving a foundation towards human sexuality. Various aspects have been used to describe human sexuality including natal sex which is a description of ones sex, sexual identity meaning view on self-concept followed by sexual orientation- where individuals sexual erotic are directed (Balswick & Balswick, 2008). Lastly, gender roles that describe ones role in response to their gender in a particular society. There can be consistency among the four dimensions of sexuality or not.
Fusion of male and female sexual gametes that is, the sperm and ovum respectively form the basis of sexuality as either male or female. However, nature is typically dynamic. This is brought by genetic differences in individuals brought by differences in the chromosomal acquisition. This brings differences in body characteristics, sexual reaction as well as behavior. Some of this complication include males with extra Y- chromosome, Klinefelter's syndrome and Turners syndrome in females. Other complications are as a result of inappropriate levels of hormones in the body like hermaphrodism and pseudo-hermaphrodism complications.
Infancy is the first stage of development of one's sexuality. From the moment of birth, both sexes develop sexual impulses including penile erection in males and virginal lubrication in females. At the age of two and five years, children become more curious about their sexuality, explore their sexual discoveries and play distinct sexual games. Parents should take the initiative to guide their children. Children should be given positive guidance on sexuality and sexual education is also vital.
Sexuality development is a long term process that passes through several stages right from infancy, early childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood to the late adulthood. Each stage is characterized by distinct behavior and should be observed keenly for any malformations. Children and youths should be guided well by adults for proper development of their sexuality (Balswick & Balswick, 2008).
