South Sudan is the youngest country in African and has been undergoing civil war since December 2013.The war affects the citizens socially, politically and economically. Before even the state was established in July 2011, previous civil wars had driven citizens out of the country such as the lost boys who were forced out of the country in 1987 when their families were attacked by the Islamic fighters from the northern Sudan. When the country got independence from Sudan, and the South Sudan formed an independent government, it was expected that peace would be upheld and families would unite again. The current war is fought on ethnicity basis with one side, lead by the current President Salva Kiir and the other end by the Vice-President Riek Machar. Kiir comes from the largest ethnic Dinka and Machar from Nuer, which is the second largest. The war has divided the soldiers and citizens in line with their racial lines. The war has affected South Sudan citizens within and outside the borders of the country negatively and derailed their personal progress.

Citizens living in the country do not lead their average expected day to day life because of fear of being attacked by the army. They live in camps under the protection of the United Nations deployed army. Free movement has been restricted, and they are not able to carry out agricultural activities to look for food for use. The lack of participation in economic activities has lead to the communities being stricken by hunger and unable to meet other basic needs. The southern Sudanese who live abroad are forced to chip in to save their loved ones from the menace. First, those living abroad are rarely divided into the tribal lines, and they have been urging the two sides to negotiate and stop the war, but their efforts have not produced any fruits.

The continuation of the war is draining the South Sudan people living in the Diaspora financially as they send money to the local residents. It makes them unable to save and may affect their lives after retiring because they will not have any savings left to use. The family set up of both those living in the country and those in Diaspora is affected negatively as well. The ones at home are unable to unite the family members and lead a normal family life. The people in Diaspora fail to lead a normal family life because of the worry they undergo because of their relatives living in the country. Young men, especially the lost boy though they have reached an age that they should be married and look after their family has not started families. The current war restricts them from starting a family because of the responsibilities they have to take care of their relatives and provide them with basic needs. The failure to get married because of the war may affect the lost boys and others in future because they may not be able to bring up a family in future after several years of the war because during retirement they may not have sufficient funds support one.

Therefore, the southern Sudan citizens living in the US and other parts of the world should unite in their efforts to urge the president and the vice president to end the war. It hurts everyone, and it is not necessary as it only fought for the ego of the two leaders but not for the good of the country. The war at the end makes people suffer regardless of their ethnic group and pushing for negotiation from united members of the society living abroad may lead to an end of the war.
