The American football is the sport in the US that involves twenty-four players, twelve from each team. It is a kind of game that is organized and carried on a rectangular field with goal posts at the final margin of the field. A player with an oval ball tries to run with the ball against its opponent with attempts to run down to the goal posts. On the other hand, the player of the opponent without the ball tries to stop the player with the ball by taking the ball from the particular player. Historically, the sport basically was assimilated and acquired from the football and the association of rugby and was initially played on November 6, 1869(Orchard, pg. 1120). A competitive game was first played between Rutgers and Princeton, and all the principles of the game conduction were under the control of the association football. Even though it is the most supported sports in the US, there has been a lot of debate in the minds of many people in the American society, critics and supporters t to whether the sport should be abolished. Since the sport has many risks during its cause and this paper establishes why should be banned.
Fundamentally, the American football endangers the lives of the players. All the players that take part in the sport are at a high risk of losing their lives. Protection of the players by the hi-tech helmets and pads makes the players believe that they can use there like a missile without adverse consequences. Hence, the better the protection, the harder, the harder the players hit each other thus risking their lives.
Moreover, the American football causes the CTE disease in players. CTE disease is primarily caused by repeated concussions when the brain slams against the walls of the skull. In the reasons of the game, the player is usually suddenly stopped by an opponent from an opposite direction and the player's body mainly hits the ground. Through this kind of action, the player does not suffer a serious injury, but the minor repeated injuries cumulatively result of all the undetected concussions that a player receives the cause of lifetime playing. All the minor injuries at one point of life they revert to the players' health, and as a result, the CTE shows up. For example, Mike Webster an American footballer after few years of retiring started suffering from chronic headaches and later died of cardiac arrest.
Also, the players who are under the age of eighteen are not legally permitted by the law and do not give consent for engaging in the dangerous activity. In this scenario, parents who expose their children at early ages have a derelict custodial responsibility. Since the educators have no additional advantage in promoting such mayhem and they should be criminally liable for allowing the minors in their institutions to engage themselves into minor skull injuries.
Also, being a successive player in America football serves no purpose in their education. At college level where the American football is also competitive serves no academic goal towards helping one attain their chosen field of study. In this case, most players in college level are repeatedly exposed to minor injuries that at one point puts their lives at risk. The person involves in the sport will rarely attain his academic standards, and there is no need to keep the sports in college which has more risks than the parallel advantages.
Professional players are not paid to standards of the sport. Many of the players take the entire life to be practitioners in the sport, they expose themselves to multiple injuries and regardless that they have an interest in earning a living later. Reality then hits them when they have no support from the legal authority as they lack as an organization to harmonize their salaries. Hence, at the expense of minor and multiple skull injuries, most players never achieve that objective of better earnings to sustain their lives.
American football in higher institutions of learning function as an unpaid farm. Players in the higher education of learning despite playing the dangerous game that puts their lives at risk, they are not subjected to any form of payment. Intrinsically, the likelihood of injury occurring in the course of the match in higher education learning institutions is equally the same as that of NFL (Orchard, pg.1117). Despite that, only the players who participate in the NFL are subjected to the payment, and the rest are not given any consideration. The risk sport adds no value to the players hence the America football should be banned definitely.
The fact that people love and watch the American football does not erase the fact that it's a deadly game to the body of each player. Dangerous games that existed before the American football have been eliminated, why we should consider the American football as an exception. A Huge number of fanatics who witness the events of the game do not guarantee any particular case not to do away with the risk sport that endangers the life of many players. For example, bare-knuckle boxing and sabre duels are not there anymore because other specialists view the whole acts of the two sports as speculating ones beating to death. It creates no difference when it comes to American football only that the American football injuries are minor and the effect is later felt in life as opposed to the immediate impact in bare and sabre boxing.
American football has effects that extend to the post-career life. Diseases like a cohort mortality in the retired football male are at three times risky as compared to the normal or typical male in the United States. The death of the ex-football player comes as a result of neurodegenerative disorders hence the risk of death arise from Alzheimer's disease and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As a consequence of the two diseases, the calculated likelihood that death occurs in the ex-football is roughly four times higher than the typical man in the United States.
NFL wastes resources that put the country in the position that it cannot support its economy. American football as a sport stimulates the downfall of the country`s economy with underproductive jobs that fail to support the wages of the US workers in the modern society. As a backbone, US economy is built on the past industrialization and reproductive businesses that added on top the national income from the exportation of the goods and services. As such, a constant growth of the economy relies upon up this kind of investment and not the television cables and airing of the American football. Its contribution to the growth of the economy is consequently alarming as it has created a zone class within the citizen of US in the brand of fanatics.
Regarding the wastage of the resources, the NFL alone is a money making an organization. The body that organizes the game (NFL) has an interest on in making profits and not taking into considerations the health status of the players. Upon getting an injury, a player who was a tremendous asset to NFL gets little attention and usually is considered as a liability to the association. Moreover, the post health lives of the players who ever participated in the American football is rarely monitored, and this renders the whole thing as selfishness and greed for money.
American football also offers a ground for social crimes during the tournaments. The sport being one of the most cheered in the entire field of sports, it attracts a numerous crowd. As a result, people are observed to engage in social crimes ranging from uncontrolled drinking of alcohol to prostitute. As such small girls as far as below the age of eighteen get into sexual affairs in the aim of looking for money. Robbery on the other side takes roots are some of the fanatics experience pickpocketing of their items like phones, wallets, phones and watches. Also, children of underage get an influence of taking alcohol and as well start smoking.
However banning of the American football will have a small effect on the rights of the people. Most people consider a guarantee on the freedom of choice on what to do and what not to do in regards to the selection of their hobbies (Sharma, pg. 36). Banning football will interfere with the right of feeling free in one`s personal life. Consequently, it is also considered as any other dangerous career with the likes of US military, sea navigation, and space exploration. Despite acknowledgment of one`s freedom and choice of work, the disadvantages associated with the American football outweigh the advantages, and it should be banned.
In conclusion, American football being one of the dangerous sports endangers the lives of the players. In that regards it leads to the development of the CTE disease due to repeated concussions, interferes with the career goals of students in the colleges and even has no standards of maintaining and caring for the post careers lives of the players and thus should be banned. Also, the NFL bears no concern to the welfare of the player, tournaments of American football facilitate social crimes, and a lot of resources are lost in managing the sport instead of investing in industrialization as a backbone of the American economy. Despite being considered to be like any other career, the American football is associated with more disadvantages to the society than the little-attributed advantages and thus should be banned to have health, moral and economically growing society.
