Both nursing and unions in the healthcare play a critical towards the development of the nursing profession. There has been a great debate regarding the role of nurses to the effects of unionization in the modern society because of the belief that unionization of nursing profession conflict with the nursing profession (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). However, after a deep examination of the matter, it is clear that nursing profession is like any other profession in a contemporary society, they experience various challenges in their professions thereby calling for the need to form unions to improve their working conditions and their welfare. Unionization of the nursing profession is of great importance in that it helps in combating ignorant management to improve the profession. By demanding better working conditions through the unions, there is realized improvement in the quality of quality of services offered to patients (Duncan et al., 2016). Additionally, unionization of the nursing profession serves to advocate for a better pay for nurses which serves as a motivating factor for the nurses. Such proves that unionization does not conflict with the nursing profession.

Reflecting on Experience

There is one occasion when unionization of the nursing profession played a critical role in the improvement of the nursing profession and the improvement of working conditions of nurses. It was a time when nurses in my facility when on strike to demand better pay. However, the management of the hospital declined to pay more and threatened to dismiss striking nurses and hire new ones. It was at this juncture that the union of nurses intervened and quashed threats of the management to lay off striking nurses. Additionally, the union set a negotiation team which helped in discussing the nurses grievances to come up with better solutions.

Making a Transition

In the process of making a transition from a member of collective bargaining unit to a manager calls for acquisition of new skills before assuming new roles as a manager. The new skills would play a critical role in ensuring that I work to develop the organization in which I am in charge (McGillis Hall, Lalonde, Kashin, Yoo & Moran, 2017). Additionally, there would be the need to change from criticizing to improving facilities and getting the workforce to work effectively to work for the delivery of organizational goals (Ross-Kerr & Wood, 2014).
