Tom Kirkman is a movie actor who can be found at television series known as designated survivor. Tom Kirkman is an American government official who served as an urban planner during the previous regime of President Richmond. He is married to Alex Kirkman, who is a former attorney at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. They have two kids- Leo Kirkman who is at his teenage and Penny Kirkman, their younger daughter. In the movies, designated survivor, he is serving as the incumbent president in the U.S. During the previous regime; he served as a secretary of housing and urban development in the cabinet of President Richmond. Kirkman became president because the president of U.S. together with all other government officials died after a terrorist attack at the State of the Union address. Kirkman was appointed as the designated survivor prior the bombing he appeared as the least qualified to occupy the position of the President. Throughout season one; he has an obligation of resolving crisis facing the nation. Also, he has to rebuild and stabilize the government since after the bombing of the capital almost all officials were wiped out.
At the day of the attack, Kirkman was sent home by the President after been deceived that he was being promoted to an Ambassador in Montreal. Later, he realizes that he was being removed from the cabinet of President Richmond. At this stage, according to the Kohlberg's theory, he is at the stage of pre-convectional morality because he is naive and depends on what he is told and what kind of rewards will come after conforming. When at home watching the State of the Union address by the President, he was made the designated survivor through a phone call. The live coverage of the address had been interrupted suddenly, but after switching to others channels, this was not the case. He suddenly decided to open the window, and he could see a fire in the Capitol building right from his house. He was immediately called by Mike Ritter (a general) to be sworn in office and occupy White House as the acting President of U.S. During that process, he asked whether anybody knew who was behind the bombing of Capitol, but he was told it was too early to know or disclose. General Cochrane started to make an unauthorized call, and this interrupted their conservation leaving the question unanswered.
After taking office, Kirkman is faced with a multiple of tasks and the major one being restoring stability in Iran and other countries that were prone to civil war. At this stage, he is at conventional morality stage because he does not know what to do. The president takes advice about the next course of action from Iranian ambassador who advises him to take his military to where it was highly needed. He was reluctant to take action, but, after he views how Muslim community was harassing a teenager, he had to send them to attack Iran.
He faced much threat from other government officials who wanted to overthrow him. They even threatened to disclose that his firstborn Leo was his stepson who his wife had gotten with her ex-boyfriend who is now serving a term in jail. At this time, he is at post-conventional morality level, and that is why he able to infringe the media who are threatening to disclose some personal information. This is seen as a significant threat to his regime, and he has to do all means to ensure that media do not reveal such information that could further ruin his reputation.
