The role of intervention programs for individuals who are getting ready to leave prison is to allow them to align with the expectations of the society such that they do not end up conflicting with law again. It allows them to restructure their lives such that they become useful members of the society and contribute greatly to its development. Most intervention plans focus on modification of behavior and decreasing cases regarding recidivism (Petersilia, 2003). The analysis puts into view intervention strategies that may align with the case study regarding John Sava. The three intervention plans that may work for John Sava include; engaging in rehabilitation services, engaging in programs that promote the development of vocational skills and engaging in a counseling program. With the intervention plans, the possible intervention goals for John include behavioral, intellectual and psychological stabilities respectively.

John explained that inasmuch that he was looking forward to his release, he was scared of what to expect once he was out of prison. He found it difficult to whom to contact and felt that he would be an imposition to the person he would contact for help. The view is that he had never been an imposition on others and hence being one after prison was a struggle for him. Such personal struggle and the ability to approach the world from a different approach after prison implies that John would need guidance especially when it comes to interacting with others. Opening up fears to a counselor assist an individual to develop strategies on how to deal with his personal struggles (Petersilia, 2003). John also took the time to write apology letters to his family members which imply that he has acceptance issues. A guidance and counseling program would assist him to develop a positive mindset on interacting with his family members. Through the help of the counselor, instead of having a lower perception towards himself, he will be able to develop the confidence to face his family members and friends without feeling disengaged.

John struggles with his cocaine addiction whereby he feels that he has not overcome it and that accessing the drug might not be challenging to him. Furthermore, he experiences social anxiety in addition to nightmares. The adequate intervention program to assist John in refraining from abusing the drug is engaging in rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation programs use medical and psychological interventions to handle the addicts such that it becomes easier for the addicts to handle the withdrawal symptoms and slowly avoid using the drugs (Nelson & Trone, 2016). The intervention would be of great help to john especially silence he is aware that he has an addiction problem.

The acquisition of vocational skills is beneficial especially when it comes to acquiring employment or becoming self-employed. Programs that promote the acquisition of vocational skills are significant particularly for prisoners who feel that they might have a difficult time adjusting to the daily activities and meeting their needs once out of prison (Petersilia, 2003). According to Johns case, he feels that his employment prospects are insignificant and uncertain on whether the skills that he acquired while he was part of the military would be helpful once he is out of prison. He is also aware that the economy is at its worst and that with his conviction record, he will have a difficult time to get a good job. In prison, he has mostly worked with the construction crew and hence quite limited in skills. Engaging in a program that promotes the development of vocational skills would be of use to John since he will have the opportunity to expand his employment prospects and also consider becoming self-employed. The programs are viewed to facilitate intellectual growth through the learning of new skills and knowledge on how to perform tasks. Such programs also facilitate the development of social skills as they consist of a large number of individuals with the desire of learning new skills (Petersilia, 2003). Such an environment would allow John to engage in frequent interactions when working with the facilitators and other trainees and hence to make it easier for him to adjust to life outside prison. In other words, a social environment would make him more active and hence contribute to his intellectual growth. As per the transitional plan reports, another consideration is John being part of the Veterans Administration Outreach Center that allows veterans to access various services. It would be easier for him to acquire medical, psychological and other relevant services that might benefit him.

As stated earlier, the three intervention plans that may work for John Sava include; engaging in rehabilitation services, engaging in programs that promote the development of vocational skills and engaging in a counseling program. Also, with the intervention plans, the possible intervention goals for John include behavioral, intellectual and psychological stabilities respectively. John expresses the fear that he might be an imposition after prison, that he does not have efficient skills that might assist him in getting employment and that he still struggles with addiction. Intervention plans play a significant role in reforming convicts as they leave prison in terms of behavior and the strategies that they may employ to become useful members of the society.
