Working in a community service workplace, all the members were expected to work creatively and give out their ideas and contribution at the appropriate time. In addition, the members were supposed to mend themselves into the existing group energy or opinion although the idea of independence and self-sovereign was much upheld. What was most rewarding from the working situation is that all the members' viewpoints were highly appreciated an aspect that inspired every member of the team. On the other hand, the situation forced every individual to surrender their ego and work towards the collective agenda of the team.

What Role Does Professionalism Play in Team Development?

One of the roles of professionalism in team development is that it ensures competency. Professionals should be well equipped and conversant with roles that they are entrusted with and they should have knowledge and skills that will aid them to govern the team endeavors. According to Purtilo & Haddad (2015), professionals should be competent and this can be achieved by attending conferences and seminars that concern related courses they are pursuing. This will improve the members being effective and competent in all the activities that the team engage in.

The second role that professionalism plays in team development is ensuring accountability in the team. Professionals should be accountable for all their dealings and actions. This includes proper management of resources and finance that the team, in general, relies on. Team leaders should be responsible and should not blame the workers for mistakes that they are accountable (Wu & Taylor, 2003). Consequently, accountability helps the team to accomplish proper management of resources since the areas that need improvement are highlighted.

According to Wu & Taylor (2003), professionals should be on the forefront in doing the right thing that benefits the entire team even if they encounter hardships along the way. These values play an important aspect in the team development because members embrace the values of trust and transparency.

This helps in maintaining respect for the workers because it limits the inappropriate spread of information that may lead to strikes or manipulation of core-workers. A leader of a team can ensure honest and fair dealings with all team stakeholders by placing trust on all members of the team. Any problem that may arise can easily be tackled since all the members are working as a team. According to West & Chowla (2017), the leader of the team should not be biased in treating other workers who are below them. In addition, this will ensure that members of the team are obligated to the responsibilities that the team leader gives them.

Ensuring that the leader is accountable and loyal as per his words and beliefs will also help them recommend honest and fair dealings with all team stakeholders (Frisch & Huppenbauer, 2014). On the other hand, being accountable for the resources of the entire team will improve the level of trust from the members because they feel that their leader is fair and honest. The leader should also be transparent in coming up with decisions that will affect the other stakeholders in general and not to be biased. Decisions that are made can be either be good or bad or also have a positive and negative impact on the entire team. Therefore, the team leader should be sensitive in coming up with honest decisions that will be fair to every member of the team.

How can a Leader Promote the Development of Professional Values within a Team?

A leader can promote the development of professional values within the team by training employees. They should be trained on programmers that help them to meet their obligation to the team. By this, members of the team get a new opportunity to exploit the core values of the team and exploit all the available chances present in trying to achieve the set goals. According to Wald (2015), leaders should give members of their team advanced training that will help them to work in unison to improve their performance in their work.

Team building is also a way that a leader can use to develop professional values within the team (Day et al., 2016). This means that activities, benefits, and challenges should be faced together as a team. Such activities enable the leader to make their team bond strong and this is crucial in the development of professional values. Activities like persistence and honesty uphold values when they are integrated together in the team. In addition, team building is an essential aspect of a team because it considers the importance of collectivity rather than one person.

Code of ethics is a key concept in a team because it governs how a team should be managed (Wald, 2015). This aids them in exploiting their potential and utilizing their talents to the maximum. This achieves team alignment and aids in the success of the team's organizational mission, vision and values.

Sharing of leadership roles and responsibilities is another way that a leader ensures team alignment with the organizational mission, vision and values in a team. According to Osula & Ng (2014), the team leader should try to allocate all members to a role as this will create a sense of responsibility. Also, this will motivate and inspire the entire team hence improving their morale. The team leader should encourage the members of the team to take leadership roles in their best positions so as to achieve success in the entire team.
