Medical studies are conducted for the overall benefit of the society. Each medical report is significant in the well-being of people, and very many problems are solved and cures discovered in this activity. It is for that reason that they should be taken with the seriousness they deserve. Negligence in medicine can prove to be fatal with far reaching consequences that could be avoided if only proper scrutiny was conducted on medical researches.

Many infertility cases are usually explainable through various diagnostic tests. There exists a standard fertility testing that helps the physician determine the cause of infertility. However, there exists a class of individuals whose infertility cannot be explained and diagnostic tests have failed to show the cause. Medical studies indicate that approximately 26% of all infertility cases are unexplainable. The figure was reached at from studies of women who underwent laparoscopy surgery in an attempt to investigate the condition of the pelvic cavity. However, modern medicine does not include laparoscopy in the package of routine fertility workup. For that reason, the percentage of unexplained infertility has risen significantly, and with current lifestyle trends, it is bound to go even higher. Currently, the unexplained infertility number stands at 50% for couples with the female partner being under the 35 years.

For both natural and assisted fertilization, the sperm DNA integrity is critical. The integrity of the sperm DNA also aids in the normal development of the embryo, fetus, and child. A group of scientists has claimed that damaged sperm DNA that exceeds 30% is significant and can be a cause of unexplained infertility. The research questions are:

1. How does sperm DNA integrity affect male infertility?

2. What percentage of damaged sperm DNA is significant in causing infertility?

3. What are the known methods of assessing the sperm DNA integrity?

Research Study Design

When it comes to medical research, a couple of methods can be employed depending on the research conducted. Research designs vary based on the nature of information, sources of data, target population, data collection methods, data analysis techniques and instruments used in data presentation. Another important factor considered in the selection of research design for a project is the shape that the collected data takes. There are two primary categories of research based on data namely, qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research focuses more on the why and how a decision was arrived at. It cannot be measured, and its primary concern is to understand in-depth the human behavior and the reason behind it. On the contrary, quantitative research focuses on measurable facts and is usually represented statistically.

For the research question, Relationship between sperm DNA integrity and unexplained infertility the best research design is a definitive one. A descriptive research design will provide insight to the study population. Its primary focus is answering the what question. It may not necessarily explain or expound on why, how or when males are ascertained to be infertile, and that is okay because the research is focused on the relationship. Descriptive research designs incorporate case study aspect in that a selected population is interviewed, observed and studied to understand behavior and come up with a pattern or trend. A descriptive research design is explanatory in nature, and a lot can be gained from the study population. The quantitative aspect is minimal and majors on qualitative results which makes it the best design to employ in this research.
