Historically, India has been characterized by social discrimination based gender, caste, religion, and religion. Dalits and women were not included in any decision-making process at regional or national level. After independence, the new government set objectives of ensuring the nation becomes unified, promote economic growth, and build industries as a strategy of reducing poverty and inequality. It is pathetic that even in the 21st century when a boy is born there is much rejoices in celebration while when a girl is born- no celebration is a norm. After a girl is born, there is much discrimination, and in the past, she would be killed before or after birth. Besides this discrimination against girls, rich or elite girls still, receive some special treatment which girls from untouchable cannot get.
In the education system, Dalits girls have not been able to fully acquire education up to date, making it hard for the Indian government to diminish the effects of caste system created before independence. In India, less than 40% of the women are literate, and most of these come from wealthy family since in impoverished regions since only 25% of poor girls (who are the majority in the country) are educated. History and unequal access to education between the untouchable and elite girls have made it hard to train all girls unequally. It is uncommon to find a girl from a wealthy family with no quality education in India. The education from other nations such as Britain has been pushing to ensure that all individuals in the country have equal access to education. However, due to unchanging social behavior and norms, efforts to pursue education are still low among the Dalits girls since they are still emotionally and physically harassed. The education system in the pre-colonial period was customized such that the poor folks will acquire an education that will assist them to work as servants of the elite groups. Girls from rich families were treated like a goddess and were allowed to acquire education. In the modern society, they have been able to advance their education to a higher level since they an opportunity of attending the best schools while their counterparts cannot afford. In fact, education has led to an increase in the between the poor and elites girls since only folks from rich family are assured of education. Poor people are unable to educate their children leading to a vicious cycle of poverty.
Discrimination among the Indian girls has been on the rise, in both Muslim and Hindu communities. Culturally, a girl or the family of the bride should pay dowry, and this means a financial burden to the family. Most of the poor girls are unable to afford the hefty payments demanded by the family of the groom hence she might not get married by a particular partner if she is unable to pay the dowry. On the other hand, girls from wealthy families can acquire any mate they wish since they have all financial capabilities to pay dowry. This kind of girl is highly valued, and she can hardly miss a life partner because most of the families would like their boys to marry such girls. Additionally, infant mortality or death during birth among the poor mothers is relatively high since they can hardly meet the high fee required by a midwife. Girls from rich families are privileged since they mostly deliver their kids in hospitals as they can afford all the expenses needed for medical care. According to research, the low level of education is a significant cause of death among women during birth as well as their infants. Lack of power and education among girls has been linked to high birth rates and population increase in Indian. In the wealthy family, women have access to contraceptives that enable to have small and manageable families. Recent international and government-sponsored aid programs are aimed at improving economic and educational opportunity for females in the hope of attaining equitable development across the country resulting to the alleviation of poverty and curbing the high rate of population growth.
In the past, women could hardly receive any position in the society aimed at bringing about social, political, or economic change. In the 20th and 21st century, many laws have been amended with a hope of granting women more freedom and rights in the society. Several legislations have been formulated and implemented in India with the aim of empowering women. Women have received reservation in all positions whether in local or national government positions. One-third of the total posts in elected or public offices are only reserved for women. However, this is different in the reservation of the scheduled tribes and scheduled castes. This means the culture of the society continue to influence how the society operates in India whether in the rural or urban areas. In most case, these seats are rendered to educated women from the wealthy families hence this privilege is mostly reserved for rich Indian girls. Most of the girls from low-income families can hardly secure such seats due to criteria used as well as they do not have adequate education to handle such jobs.
Since the enactment of various policy that requires women to have equal employment as men do more women have been getting employed in many white collars jobs and other formal sectors. Both girls from rich and untouchable background have been getting these job opportunities. Most girls from Dalits caste are employed in low paying positions since they lack necessary education and skills required for one to occupy top positions. On the other hand, girls from elite and wealthy family backgrounds are privileged since they have required academic qualifications. Most of the study abroad making hence they are fit to occupy both national and international positions. They are well remunerated compared to their counterparts who hold lower positions such as secretary, tea girl, and other subordinate positions. This means that right to an equal pay has only helped women and girls from the wealthy background while others are still oppressed.
In India, most people believe that women are entitled to own property just like men are supposed to possess. Many policies such as Hindu succession Act were passed with the aim of allowing women get an equal share in inheritance from their parents just like their brothers do. Most of the women from Dalits background have a right to inherit properties, but they have nothing to inherit since their parents own almost nothing. Many of these parents live in slum such as Dharavi hence their kids can only inherit payment of rents. Additionally, those girls from middle class where they can inherit a few properties find themselves unable since they value family than properties. Since when they were young, they have been socialized how precious a family is, hence in case of conflict between owning properties and having a stable family they forego wealth. They can hardly buy properties of their own since they are unemployed and those employed earn peanuts. Girls of wealthy families are privileged since they can have many properties to inherit from their parents. In most cases, they tend to neutralize male chauvinism compared to their counterparts hence they own personal properties. Those who are not lack enough to inherit properties from their parent have well-paying jobs that enable them to buy their property.
Many nations across the world have made significant progress in ensuring all people in the society receive equal treatment. In India, it is not different compared to where they were a few decades ago. The facts that not all women have received equal benefit all classes of people have progressed positively. This because any reform made in India is customized with a woman in mind. They have been able to receive education something that was impossible a few years ago. Education enables them to acquire skills required in the workplace as well as get significant positions in all public offices. Most of the employed women are working hard to ensure they uplift their living standards of their fellow girls by starting community programs in favor of women.
