Technology has been on the platform of improving the livelihood of people. It has led to both negative and positive consequences. Social media is one of the platforms that technology has taken the course. In the process of communicating through the media, expression of feelings towards a posted item is done through replying to the posted item either by use of a written piece of information, pictures or diagrams (Englander et al 32-33). According to the cyber-crime agencies, such responses that are intended for causing harm or hurting the feelings of the other person through social media is termed as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying on the social media has taken course today, and if necessary measures are not taken, most people will become the victim of bullying (Doane et al 136). The behavior of cyberbullying can be prevented through some of the following ways.
One way of preventing cyberbullying is through taking the legal action (Navarro 87). When bullied and taken the step of reporting the incidence to the relevant authority, one would require providing the evidence. To do this, when bullied, it is good to get the screenshots and save them to act as evidence of bullying. This would prevent the person from continuing bullying other people.
The second option that can help in the prevention of bullying is by blocking the person with the habit of bullying. For instance, in the social accounts like the Facebook, one can unfriend the [person or block the person, and it would not be possible for the bully to access the victim again.
Most of the cyber bullies attack their victims with an expectation that they would retaliate (Phillips 38). Failure to retaliate discourages the bullying person, which increase the chances of the bullying habit to cease. Retaliating to the bullying person would only motivate the person thus increasing the chances of being bullied once again.
Another way that could discourage the bullying in the social media is by having a backup. Young people when feel threatened in the social they require to get the advice from the trusted adults who may help them solve the issues in the right way (Doane et al 137).. In the case of children, they need to talk to their parents/guardians or make the use of the school counselor. When intervened, the young people may stop feeling threatened and could gather the courage to report the incidence anonymously.
Cyberbullies should be let to understand that their behavior is not right. It is good not to remain as a bystander and entertain the bullies but instead act as a good friend by letting them know that they are not doing the right thing (Doane et al 142). They should be let to know that harassment does not make a person the hero but instead only exposes one's stupidity. Making them realize that their behavior is not going to be tolerated by the authority is important.
Remaining civil in the social media will also play a role in the prevention of the cyberbullying. Trying not to intrude other peoples businesses is the right thing. The more one gets in touch with other peoples affairs the high the chances of being bullied. Remaining civil would help one from being trapped in the circle of friends that like gossiping.
Cyberbullying in the social media if prevented would encourage more people to interact and make friends. It would increase the means of passing the information and create an opportunity for which people would appreciate the sharing of information through the social media.
