Syria has been plagued with violence for several years throughout a gruesome civil war. The conflict shows no signs of slowing down, were bombing and killing has been intensifying in Syria. Syrian refugees are fleeing their homes and cities to find refuge in other countries. The majority of Syrians are making dangerous crossing across the eastern Mediterranean are displaces by the horrifying civil war that has forced roughly half of the country's population out of their homes. Most Syrians would prefer to have stayed in Syria or somewhere close by, where family, culture, and language are familiar.
The U.S. should welcome refugees who are seeking security, safety, and shelter in our country. Escaping terrorism in their country, losing family members, friends and their homes through violent attacks is a horrific life to live. Slamming the door in their faces is inhumane and is the wrong thing to do. Most westerners have a fear for Syrian refugees because of deadly terror attacks in Europe. The fear of the western world is Islam, crime, high birthrates and the collapse of the social system. Many westerners believe that militant groups/Isis may seek to use refugee system to enter into westernize countries. Its true some might slip through the cracks. However, the majority are peaceful people who are trying to escape the violence and persecution in their country. They have regular lives just like us.
Even if the EU or the U.S, the percentage rate of Islamic religious followers would only raise a small percentage. Birth rates in many western parts of the world are very low. Most fear that Asylum seekers will take over their country in the West, which is based on fear and insecurities. Muslims follow the teachings of the Quran. Compared to Christianity, Islam has some similarities, but there are significant differences. Muslims claim that Jesus was one of the most famous prophets. The majority of Muslims are peaceful people that use the Quran for support, strength, faith, peace and love to keep hope alive.
Canada is a great example to help and embrace Syrian refugees into their country. They look past other peoples differences and see the humanity behind them. Most Syrian immigrants are often highly skilled people. They can bring wealth and can stimulate the economy. After reading A Hope More Powerful than the Sea, it touched my heart and helped me to understand the refugees struggles and pain they had to go through. This is a problem involving real people that are just like us, and it cant be ignored. Dora who is one of the refugees from the book A Hope More Powerful than the Sea opened my eyes about the life of refugees. Its hard not feel emotional what Doaa and her family had to go through.
Flemings (the author) story places a human face, feelings, fears, sadness, loss, losing hope, fighting to survive but never giving up, no matter how hard it got. The horrors of Doaas journey are too real for many thousands of refugees, and it is what made this story so unique is that she never gave up and managed to survive. Doaa thinks more about others than of herself. Which most westerners only worry about themselves? Its not their problem what goes on in other countries. Leaving everything behind she knew love, family, friends, and home because she had no another option and this applies to many Syrian refugees.
The world needs come together, but instead, it has become more divided. Many countries refuse to take in any refugees due to ignorance, fear, cultural clashes, religious beliefs, and terrorism. Melissa Fleming has made a huge impact in my life. Reading her book about Doaas AlZamel extraordinary story is life changing to me and unforgettable. It gives the voice who knows the horrors of trying to flee a country that is in a gruesome civil war. I feel a deep sadness what Doaa and her family had to endure.
As of now, I see refugees with a different perspective. I feel compelled to give refugees a helping hand. It opened up my heart towards them and not see them as a threat or users of our social system. I look forward to meeting one of the refugees on the day. This book makes me want to pay forward towards the Syrian people or any refugees. They deserve our respect, care, and love. They are not second or third class citizens. If we stop being so judgmental and uncaring, the world would be a much better place. If the tables were turned, we would like to be helped as well. Its time to make a positive change in this world.
