My field study is the Manhattan shopping Mall located at the center of Midtown Manhattan, New York. The mall is also close to the empire state building, Madison Square Garden and the Pen station. The site is far from school, but I was able to make the first visit after leaving school on Friday from 2.00 PM to 4 PM. I was not fully aware of the structures of the area as well as the requirements to access the premises. The Mall has an established reputation as being the only indoor shopping mall in New York City. Before visiting the place, I had to come up with main assumptions to describe the place. One of these assumptions is that the mall was open to anyone seeking to transact the business of fulfilling pleasure. I also assumed that the Mall operates around the clock and that it is only preferred by the rich. Another important assumption I had before visiting the place was that the mall had many different retail outlets under different managements.

After visiting the area, I realized that the mall is a complete indoor mall with many business premises. Some of the business that operates in the mall includes entertainment, art gallery, and fashion among other top businesses. I never thought that a Mall with so many business entities would have a reception area as witnessed at the Manhattan Mall. A customer service desk is situated at the main entrance to the Mall. However, the desk is operational from Monday to Saturday starting from 10 AM to 8 PM. On Sunday; the desk is operational from 11 AM to 6 PM. The main role of the customer service desk is to offer services such as offering direction to customers. It makes a lot of sense to have the customer desk since the mall is too big and one can easily get lost. There was also a security officer at the main entrance of the mall who scanned every person entering the mall. A male security officer was in charge of male visitors while a female security officer was in charge of female visitors. More security was evident as police officers could be spotted inside the mall. This type of security measure is reasonable given the fact that security issues often arise in such places. The public has to be protected from thugs or terrorists.

It is important to acknowledge the fact that the Manhattan shopping Mall is a state of art facility with a well-done interior that suits its reputation. The shopping mall is occupied by people from different walks of life who either own businesses or work at the mall. One can also witness people from different walks of life visit the mall for different reasons. It is not possible to state that only people of a specific age visit the mall since there is no age limit at the main entrance. People of all ages as well as gender can be seen visiting the mall every day. The visitors come in the form of couples, friends, families or individuals. It is also evident that the people seen at the mall come from different social, economic classes. Especially the visitors, the mall have an enormous capacity to accommodate visitors from various socioeconomic classes. This is facilitated by the diversity of products and services within the indoor mall. On the other hand, the business operators at the mall seem to come from a well-off social class.

At the Manhattan shopping mall, people interact in different ways. At the entrance, the workers of the mall, which include security officers and the receptionist, interact with visitors who seek to inquire. The interaction at this point is very professional. However, the points of interaction are the business premises which bring together business operators and customers. At this point, it is evident that the parties interacting are easy with each other. There are also social areas that bring together people to interact freely. From the look of people at the mall, there it was evident that many people were satisfied with the business going on at the mall. Only a few could be seen expressing dissatisfaction, but this could be due to personal reasons or other forms of disagreement during the various processes of interaction at the mall. Since the place was always busy with people running different errands, my presence was hardly noticed.

The visit at the Manhattan shopping mall confirmed all my assumptions apart from the one indicating that the visitors of the mall are from a high socio-economic class. People from different socio-economic class are all welcome to the mall.
