There are five essential functions of the idea of management in any firm or organization. These five functions include planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling Planning is the most crucial stage in management which entails setting the goals of the business and the objectives through which the set goals are to be achieved. Planning in a respiratory therapy clinic is important as it establishes the missions and the visions of the clinic. Also, through planning the head of all the respiratory therapists has to put forward the worksheet of all the workers and their work schedules. Such planning ensures that all the patients are attended, and the available workforce is not over the worked company can establish its mission and visions of the business.

Controlling seeks to oversee the overall performance of the firm and hence give the right direction whenever action needs to be taken when something is not working in line with the desired expectations. For example, in a respiratory health clinic whenever the therapist is observed to offer any wrong service or treatment to the patient, the head of the therapist can be to correct him/her so as not to generate any errors (Satake 2015).

Organizing as one of the main functions of management entails trying to find out the original method to systemize all the activities and resources of the organization. Organizing in respiratory therapy clinic is crucial as it ensures that all the activities are being carried out according to the plans. Respiratory therapists are responsible for initiating and managing life support for patients who are in the intensive care unit. The ICU is a very sensitive department and therefore requires the best ways of carrying out the duties.

Decision making in an organization entails formulation of the leadership structure so that all the workers know to whom to report to and ask for clarifications. When making decision in a firm, the flow of instructions is seamless, and there is less conflict. In respiratory therapy, quality decision making is imperative in offering treatment to the patients. And helps to enhance coordination of all the activities and ensures that there is no breakdown of is through decision making that the employers receive motivation from the management regarding salary increment and holidays so that they can become more productive and also as a way of being grateful to the workers.

Directing in a firm helps the managers to clearly give orders and instructions to the workers so that they can get what is expected from them. For a respiratory therapy clinic to gain maximum benefits from the work of their employees, they have to outline concisely all the instructions against the expected level of the activities to be carried out. For example, conservation of mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit requires clear instructions and sensitization of the roles and responsibilities as any error may lead to loss of life (Godfrey & Mahoney, 2014).


In classic management staffing involves the process recruiting and retaining of employees in a firm so as to positively impact the growth of the firm. In respiratory therapy, the clinic should be able to use the best approach to hire and decide which employees to retain. Only workers who are efficient and more productive should be retained.

Directing as a function of management is the closest relation to teaching, guiding and motivating workers in respiratory therapy. When therapists are sent to schools to conduct public education on asthma issues, they can easily teach teachers and parents how to identify asthma symptoms. Through directing, the manager can easily identify which respiratory therapist is keen to follow the orders and directions given and therefore reward them back regarding salary raise and promotion in their positions.
