The article talks compare the friends displayed online on social media platforms such mainly Facebook. The writer had 700 online friends and was proud of all the friends, acquaintances and Cyber pals she had made. However, in real life, she had very few friends because of her workaholic character, lack of an office environment that enables her to interact with to associate with other workmates and her love of being left alone. She ended up having very few friends to hang around with and attributed the few friends to
As a result of the above conditions, she decided to have a Facebook party. She used Facebook to organize an event and invited her digital friends. Responses were given via the Facebook platform as it provides three categories for highlighting attendance as either attending, maybe attending or not attending. Tabulation of the results a week later showed that fifteen people were attending, sixty maybe attending and a few hundred were not attending. All the other friends out of the 700 cyber pals ignored the invitation altogether. An estimate of 20 people was made to be attending, which sounded good for her as this turnout would show some good number of potential new friends, though not compared to the numbers seen online.
On a material day, she prepared herself and waited for the friends to come along. Brimming with optimism, she waited for a long time, and no one showed up in the end. Paula showed up later and gave her idea over the issue. She said that people felt shy about the idea of making new friends, giving an appropriate reason behind the close to zero turnouts for the event. She says that Paula had also almost decided not to turn up for the event.
However, although they were only two friends, Paula provided enough company for the writer. They discussed various issues such as their jobs, relationships, hobbies and sports among others. A good physical interaction that results in greater friendship originating from a social platform. However, with nothing left to talk about, the new friend made her way out, providing no certainty for continued friendship.
The entire party ended with only one person attending, out of the estimated 20 people who opted to attend via Facebook. The result is a realization that attending in Facebook means maybe and maybe attending means that one is likely not to attend. The writer ended up spending the rest of the day alone with a combination of alcohol to turn off her thoughts. Such incidences result in self-pity, a feeling of let down to the hosts and regrets for the loss of past friendships. It causes one to feel lonely, anger towards the entire world and being unwanted by many of your friends.
It finally sank to the writer that no more person was coming when the time was clicking close to midnight. This incidence provides vital lessons in life that led her thoughts on how to revitalize her social life. The story indicates that Facebook friendship is not an indication of the actual friends in reality. People should invest more in physical friendship as opposed to online friendship since the two do not relate in any manner. Irrespective of the digital era with no time for interaction, people should spare some time to interact with their physical friends. The writer shows her cause of action and promises herself to spend less time online.
