Essay on Ethical Perspective of Profession

Many analyses have been broadly performed to come up with a good definition of a profession as far as ethics is concerned. Some analyses are empirical as they describe it as it is while some explain it differently. According to Bayles's argument. Ethical models and some norms always assume to consider some factors which are including, an ethical model relating a parent to a child always makes some assumptions about a child's ability. Therefore, a model of full equally cannot work for those children who are very young since they cannot perfectly have a professional relationship. To develop an ethical model which has got a vast scope, the model should not be based on the unusual situations. Thus, professional ethics should be based on the in the usual situations which involve the relationship between the professional and the client (Bayles, 2009).

Engineer as a professional provides consultancy services to a company on matters of architecture, for example, the designs of company houses and so on. Therefore, the Engineer is mandated with the responsibility of deciding on the company about the design of the necessary structure or building. Accordingly, the Engineering professional is an expert acting in the direction of the company which is the client. Therefore, I agree with the argument that, professions are for-profit business primarily and also ethical codes are developed through it to be more profitable. Thus, professionalism helps to increase the profits of the clients (Bayles, 2009).

The question asked is whether jobs in the world criminal justice are professions are old and non-existing. Therefore, in one view, a professional is an opposite of an amateur. The main difference is whether one is being paid or not. The idea of profession emerged from the middle ages, where law, academics, and the clergy were distinguished as professions from other jobs and careers. Each profession is believed to have begun with a declaration from the public, a profession of a vow to take up the job as one's way of life and not just to earn a salary. Today three criteria are considered at least to be necessary for profession perspectives, one training exceptionally, gaining intellectual component that is very significant to the area of study and lastly offering an essential service to the society. Engineering jobs always generally provide an indispensable service for the society, for example, civil engineers build roads used by the public. Hence Engineers are vital when it comes to the impotence of the services which are offered to the society at large (Bayles, 2009). Many people in the field of Engineering undergoes a perfect training over their training period and hence are more qualified to provide services to the society and their clients. But some often forgo the kind of higher education that is always associated with a significant intellectual component.

Therefore, as argued by Bayles, a profession should meet all of the five criteria which are extensive training, a component of significant intellectual, offering an important service to the society, credentialing, creation of the organization of the professional members and lastly autonomy of individual practitioners (Bayles, 2009). Therefore, according to the criteria above, Engineering can be considered as a profession since it incorporates all the five criteria for professions. A profession is consequently defined by the five criteria. Thus, for one to become a professional in a certain field, must have satisfied all the three criteria.

As in the case of Engineers, all the five criteria needed are satisfied because, an Engineer always undergoes extensive training in order to gain more experience in addition to the experience gained from the educational aspect. Engineers have intellectually undergone a proper education system and therefore bear academic papers related to the Engineering profession. Engineers are very important to the society more so as far as the services they offer to the society are concerned, this is because Engineers mostly use their gained knowledge to provide their services to the society. Engineers, knowledge help the society to have good roads, electricity, and clean water and so on. Therefore, Engineering as a profession satisfies the criteria of proper service providing to the society. Engineers also are provided with credentials after schooling, and this being a criterion, makes engineering to be an example of a profession. Engineers in every nation have got the organization of Professional Engineers, the organizations have got a robust structure hence ensuring that those who are joining are professional Engineers only, this, therefore, allows Engineering to be considered as a profession. Engineers always have practitioners under them. After graduation from the universities, individuals are taken by professional Engineers to train under them. Therefore, Engineering has got a code of ethics apart from satisfying the Bayles' criteria of a profession. Engineering is associated with ethical practices such as ethical conduct at work, respect, and equality. Thus, Engineers must treat their clients with respect, equally and must be able to conduct themselves well when providing their services to the society.

Like most philosophers, Plato has maintained a virtue-based perspective of ethics, meaning that, happiness and the well-being of a professional is the main aim of one to think morally and conduct morally. Professional are often in a similar position as that of Gyges as sometimes they fail to give full definitions of their arguments about something they are doing or researching through (Frede, 2017). This is because Gyges failed to give the detailed reasons about the arguments he came up with about ethics and is similar to the positions of which some professions fall at times.

What it takes to an ethical professional?

For one to be an ethical professional, should be able to conduct the works under him/her in a good manner, should be morally upset, meaning should have good morals when working amongst other individuals, should be obedient to other people working with him or her. One should also work with integrity to the people hence displaying a professional ethical quality.

Ethical risks for professional

Professional always has some risks related to ethics; these risks always migrate from the environment where they are offering their services or from themselves. Some professionals might be attempted to violate the rules of integrity and involve themselves in bribes hence leading to corruption. Another risk comes from the individuals who tend to create a very harsh environment under which the professional's may be working thus risky to the services of the professionals. A code of ethics does not guarantee an ethical behavior, this is because the code of ethics might be stipulated, but a person might not be at a position to follow the law of ethics hence leading to a violation of the same.
