Despite technological advances in the automobile industry and overall vehicle safety stride, there is still increased automobile accidents. According to WHO, approximately 1.2 million people die every year due to traffic crashes. This figure is likely to go up along with the increasing global population. Furthermore, World Health Organization has indicated that injuries sustained during accidents are the forefront cause of death for young people, aged 15-30. Possibly, the more astonishing piece of information studies that have been carried out which suggest that the current figure will go up and around 2.0 fatalities will take place by the year 2020.The causes of a car accident are pretty different. However, it is essential for all of us to understand the most common causes of car accidents to make every effort to prevent them.

Studies have shown that speeding is largely the most cause of automobile accident. The faster you drive, the slower your reaction time will be if you need to prevent a car accident. Speeding is going higher than what road and weather condition allows. For example, if it is raining heavily and visibility is poor, you need to use caution and slow instead of going the posted 50 mph.

Another common cause of automobile accident is drunk driving. Drinking while driving can greatly influence alertness and vision, slow down reaction time, and create an environment which is highly conducive to crashes. Furthermore, when someone is drunk, the senses are impaired, and this leads to decreased muscle coordination, and further slows down reaction time.

Also, talking to people in the car while driving is another cause of the accident. The truth is that talking with people in the car draws your mind away from the task at hand. It can be precise become dangerous if the driver is in a serious conversation while requiring to perform difficult tasks such as merging onto a highway. The bottom is that conversation is a distraction. The same reason applies to use of mobile phone by talking or texting. Driving while using a mobile phone also diverts your attention and can slow down your reaction. Lastly, playing with the radio has also contributed to various accidents. While operating a radio, it means that only one hand is on the steering wheel and this means a car can slip out of control if you hit a pothole. Also, your attention is diverted from exactly what you are supposed to do since you want to concentrate on the radio until you get what you wanted to listen to.

There are several ways of preventing automobile accidents. For example, looking for a designated driver who is sober to drive you home can prevent drunk driving accidents. Drunk driving can also be prevented through education to enable people to make better decisions. Drivers should not overspend and need to observe speed limit traffic signs. Maintain the required speed limit to reach your destination safer. Traffic police should also make sure that they arrest those drivers that do not adhere to traffic rules and even there driving licenses intercepted forever. On the issue of using mobile phones and talking to other people while driving, it is better if the public is properly sensitized regarding the dangers of such. Drivers should also avoid driving at night or during bad weather since this condition leads to low visibility.

Overall, most of this automobile accidents are preventable if drivers take more precaution and traffic rules are followed. The reduction of automobile accidents remains in the hands of drivers and not the government. Already various laws aiming at prevention of road accidents have been implemented. However, the problem is following the laws. If we adhere to traffic rules and remain cautious while driving, the rate of accidents will drastically reduce.
