Regular physical activity is universally recommended for health benefits to an individual. The world health organization categorized physical activities as constituting main causes of premature deaths if not regularly undertaken. Benefits of physical activity on health are well enshrined in literature as proven by research. Nonetheless, psychological theories have elucidated the possible causes of inconsistency when it comes to regular physical activity engagement. Some theories have been postulated by various scholars to respond to reasons of inconsistency in physical activity engagement.

Self-sufficiency has been utilized to psychologically explain whether an individual will undertake regular physical activities or not. Self-efficiency, therefore, spells out what activities people engaged in, their ability to persist even in difficulties situation, and their desires to cope with the stress and situation helps to influence individual engagement in physical activities. Self-efficiency has proved that individuals have different behavioral natures based on their psychology. Those who cannot endure stress, withstand setbacks associated with the physical activities become inconsistent. The magnitude, strength, and generalities vary with self-sufficiency.

Planned behavior helps in figuring out adoption motivation and adherence to physical activities. The individual who has attained their requirement in physical activities would, therefore, opt not to continue with the regular physical activities. The attitude of an individual will enhance their engagement in activity since they hold the belief that it is within their control to continue of back off. While some individuals engage in physical activity due to excitement, others believe that they undertake physical activities to fulfill a given goal. For instance, one would engage in physical activity to lose weight, attaining recognition among others after which the individual quits the physical activity. Unsuccessful behavioral intervention results into drop out of physical activity (Richard & Edward, 2000)

Most individuals regulate their behavior towards activities which vary in violation and choice thus are controlling their behavior towards pressure demand following the outcome. The basic psychological needs of the individual are in line with their relationship to mental health and well-being of the individual. Therefore, the individuals who tend not to undertake regular exercise is attributed to autonomy, competence, and optimism in participating in an activity (Duncan et al., 2012)
