Various scientists have brought forth arguments as to why the human race will one day need to leave earth, such as the looming tragedies as a result of climate change. Different planets are being discovered one after the other. The newly discovered planet named Hope is about to be conquered by a billionaire, who seeks to invite 1000 individuals for free, to go and start a new world there. Unfortunately, I do not intend to be among the people who will accept his generous offer for specific reasons which range from the high levels of uncertainty to how irresponsible it would be to leave a place I have come to know as my only home.
Although it is commonly argued that everything has its risks, when it comes to moving to a new planet, the risk is too big and irreversible. Without risks, no progress will ever be achieved. However, in the case of moving to a new planet which has never been populated before, the slightest overlooked factor may cause a great tragedy, and people may never reach their destination. One of the uncertainties I fear the most is the spacecraft running out of fuel. Assuming that the direction to Hope changes due to revolution, we may find that it takes much longer to get there than was initially anticipated. As a result, the fuel loaded into the spacecraft may run outand with nowhere to fill up on more along the way; people may easily get stuck mid space. This seems like a huge risk to take.
Another reason why I would not travel to Hope for a new start is that I may never make it there due to old age. The universe works with extremely long distances and time. Therefore, traveling to hope may not happen within a few months, but rather in hundreds of years. This would mean that the 1000 individuals will probably have to spend the rest of their lives living on a spacecraft rather than on the new planet. Although I may not make it there, it is possible that maybe my children and grandchildren will. However, I do not want to make such a decision for my heirs who should make a choice for themselves if they want to leave Earth or not.
So far, Earths gravity is being exerted on many other planets; it is the reason why we cannot jump as high as we are so close to its surface. This makes it unreasonable to pack and move to a new planet which is still being affected by earths gravity. Having to float as I do my daily chores, and probably having to control everything so as to prevent them from flying away does not seem like so much fun. It seems like a daunting task, having to chase after meals which float away as I try to put them in my mouth. Therefore, I would rather stay and wait for the perfection of artificial intelligence which will ensure that my life on Hope is smooth and exciting, rather than tiresome.
I will not travel to Hope as I feel like I have a responsibility here on earth. All the problems being experienced that are triggering climate change are manmade. If I leave, there will be one person less to advocate for the protection of the environment. Therefore, I choose to stay and actively participate in making this planet a better home.
